Paducah KY: A City of Crafts and Folk Art

In this sophisticated river town,art goes far beyond being an avocation – it’s the fabric of life. That’s why UNESCO has designated it a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.

The Lower Town Arts District offers hands-on creative experiences and gallery exhibitions along with the popular yearly music festival. The River Discovery Center displays the history and significance of the area.

Whitehaven Welcome Center

The Whitehaven Welcome Center,or the Anderson-Smith House,is a historic house in Paducah that serves as a welcome center and rest area for visitors to Kentucky. The historic house was built in a Classical Revival design and has two bell towers. The home also features a large terrace overlooking the river.

Stroll around the scenic Paducah Riverwalk or visit popular attractions like LowerTown Arts District or the National Quilt Museum. You can even take a trip to the Lloyd Tilghman House & Civil War Museum,which is a historic house turned museum that showcases Western Kentucky’s role in the civil war.

Visit the River Discovery Center for a more educative experience. The facility has several interactive exhibits that celebrate Paducah’s maritime legacy and lore. In the pilothouse simulator,you can try out your skills as a captain of a towboat or pleasure boat. The center promotes an interest and understanding of America’s important rivers among people of all ages.

Bob Noble Park

Located in Paducah KY,Bob Noble Park is one of the city’s premier parks. The park is home to a variety of recreational opportunities and the Peck Education Trail. It also hosts annual events such as fundraising walks,concerts and movies at the amphitheater in the summer.

The 145-acre park,located centrally in Midtown,features a five acre lake,gazebos and fishing piers. It also has walking paths,a swimming pool,and access to the Greenway Trail. Other amenities include a skatepark,picnic areas,an outdoor amphitheater,a music garden and playgrounds.

The park was named after Captain Robert Noble who donated $10,000 to improve the area. The park was built with many of its features after Captain Noble’s donation,such as a large green area that used to be a swamp. The park is also home to the Lloyd Tilghman House,a museum operated by the local Sons of Confederate Veterans chapter. The museum showcases the role played by western Kentucky during the American Civil War.

William Clark Market House Museum

William Clark Market House Museum offers a unique educational experience with a collection artifacts that tell the story of Paducah. The exhibits are changed regularly,so visitors will always have something new to discover.

The museum is conveniently located in downtown Paducah,and other attractions such as the Yeiser Art Center or Noble Park are easily accessible. Visitors can choose to take a tour with a guide or explore the exhibitions at their leisure. The museum is open every Saturday from March 1st to mid-December.

Exhibits include a magnificent Old Paris wedding vase given to Clark by the Marquis de Lafayette,the full golden oak woodwork of the DuBois Robertson Drug Store built in 1876 (later List Drug Store) and the beautiful rosewood furniture from the original List drug store that was re-created for this museum. Alben Barkley’s Memorial Room pays tribute to the 35th Vice-President of the United States,who was born in Paducah. A Civil War exhibit includes a quilt by Mrs. Robert E. Lee as well as chairs that were used in the White House by the Lincolns.
